Foreign bodies like oils, sweat and cosmetics that all have the potential to cause irritations, sore eyes and expel odours along with natural debri like dirt are left in the spa/pool during everyday use. To irradicate these foriegn bodies the water needs to be 'shocked' and have its water clarity restored.

Weekly use of an oxidiser is necessary in a home spa but when dealing with a spa in a commercial setting this should be done more often. In a pool with a water temperature above 15°C weekly oxidisation is needed and once the pool temperature drops to below 15°C then monthly 'shocking' should be enough.
